Press Release

As the Hinckley Road Cemetery is nearing capacity, Stoke Golding Parish Council bought a site in Wykin Lane at the edge of the village to provide facilities for burials, cremation plots and memorials. Over the last few years this site has been developed in line with planning requirements of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council - for example the wide entrance and driveway, turning circle and parking within the grounds. The Parish Council, recognising that the whole of the area will not be needed for burials for many years, is imaginatively designing the development of a wildlife environment alongside the more formal cemetery area.

It is planned that burials will begin on the right-hand side of the available ground where there is room for burials for the next 100 years. In this area the Committee would like to know people's preferences for the overall style of the entrance, the hard surfacing for the driveway and paths and the design of seating and other features. There is the possibility of placing a statue or sculpture, as a centrepiece in the turning circle and the Committee would like to know people's ideas for this. Already various suggestions have been made for the name of the new cemetery - its going to be there for a long time so it needs to be something special and perhaps with a local flavour!

The ground to the left would be available for development into a woodland where native British trees could grow undisturbed for many years to come and where woodland flowers could be introduced. It is intended that the footpath along the edge of the cemetery at the Wykin end will be improved to provide a mud-free connection to the footpath through the fields. The pond (re-excavated and enlarged) could provide a habitat for aquatic and marshland plants, insects and amphibians. It is hoped to seed the large open grassland zone with meadow plants and flowers. All of this would make a calm and pleasant place for people to walk in and it would be of increasing wildlife value. The wooded area could enable those who want a woodland burial with biodegradable coffins to have that facility and perhaps mark the grave with a tree.

The Parish Council has already put aside funds for this exciting development but it is hoped that individuals and organisations may be able to help with donations and community events such as tree planting. The Committee also intends to seek grants from relevant sources to help further.
