The Methodist Church ...                      and its opening in March1933                                                   Architect's drawing

The first Methodist Church was the building in Station Road adjacent to number 45, now in private ownership. This was a ‘Primitive Methodist’ Church and probably opened around 1857. By 1905 this building had become too small, land was bought in Main Street and the hall at the rear of the present church was built. On maps of the village from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this site used to be the village pound where farm animals which had strayed were brought to be re-united with their owners. This hall was used as a church, Sunday School and for other activities. Today it is used for church meetings, Tai Chi, Keep Fit, Women’s Institute meetings and the Sew and Sew craft group

The original church in Station Road was sold and, as it was used by village ladies during the First World War to knit garments for the troops, it became known as ‘The Women’s Hall’ – a name that survives to this day.

The third church, which is the one used today, was opened on March 18th 1933. This is believed to be one of the last churches planned by the Primitive Methodists and one of the first, if not the first, to be opened after the formation of the Methodist Church. This happened at the beginning of 1933 when the Primitive Methodist Church amalgamated with the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
