The Ashby Canal and its environs Work to build the canal from the Coventry Canal to the Ashby Woulds began in 1794 and was completed by 1804, carrying coal, limestone, bricks and salt glazed pipes. The Midland Railway bought the canal in 1846. In 1856 steam tugboats appeared but drawn boats were the norm. From 1944 onwards parts were closed due to subsidence and the canal now ends near Snarestone. 9th January 2010
