Foreword In writing this foreword the
present Trustees would pay tribute to the founder of The Charity, Thomas Barton,
who, with great generosity and foresight gave an endowment of land and buildings
in 1400 A.D. to provide an income for the upkeep of roads and ‘cawsys’ in
the village. In 1992 the original wording of his Deed was altered by the
Charity Commissioners to allow the Trustees to provide other things of general
benefit to the village population, as roads and pavements had, by that time,
become the responsibility of local and county councils. A tribute too,
must be paid to all the past Trustees, who ensured that the Charity survived and
prospered. Thomas Barton would surely look down with approval on their
achievements. Paul M Spokes |
